Frequently Asked Questions
How much will it cost to install a solar water heating system?
Every installation is individual and designed to suit the requirements of each household therefore the cost of installation does vary but however we do offer a FREE no obligation survey. What does the installation include?
Every solar installation is different depending on the layout of the property and the existing hot water system. A general installation includes a solar heating panel of evacuated tubes, a solar rated twin coil cylinder, electronic controller, pressure vessel, circulating pump, piping, valves, safety controls and insulation, non-toxic anti-freeze, scaffolding (if required), installation, commissioning and making good. How much will I save?
Solar energy installations will save up to 2000kw hours of power over the year and provide up to 70% of your domestic hot water needs. Other benefits are if you use the panels for under-floor heating for example. The financial savings depend on what type of fuel you use (electricity is much more expensive than gas), how much hot water you use, when you use it, how efficient your boiler is and of course how much we assume fuel prices will rise in the future. An average domestic system saving can range from £100 to £500 per annum – this would be much more for larger installations and swimming pools. How many panels will I need?
On an average house a twenty tube evacuated panel is sufficient to supply the solar energy needs of an average household. How much disruption will a solar panel installation cause?
Space Renewable Energy Ltd will make the installation as easy and hassle free as possible. Is Space Renewable Energy Ltd fully accredited?
Yes, Space Renewable Energy Ltd is Microgeneration Cerification Scheme (MCS) accredited for the Low Carbon Buildings Programme through the UK. This is an onerous qualification to obtain. If a solar installer is not accredited by MCS then you cannot claim a renewable energy grant.Do we have enough sun for solar power?
Yes, it is important to distinguish between solar radiation levels and air temperature. Even if you cannot see the sun, if there is daylight there will be "diffuse" solar radiation. Solar radiation is what heats the panels and solar radiation levels in this country are as high as parts of Spain and 60% of the levels at the equator.Which position should the panel face?
They should face roughly south, but anything between southeast and southwest is fine. Installations can also be carried out on east/west facing roofs.Does the panel work when the weather is cold?
Yes the panel will work on cold, clear winter days. Can I convert my existing system?
Yes, a solar heating system can be fitted to existing water heating systems.Do I need planning permission for solar panels?
No, unless your house is a listed building or is under construction. We can always check on your behalf with your local council if planning permission is required.
